Computer software is as distinguished a discipline as hardware. Software is the programs that allow a computer to carry out a specific task. Software basically contains a set of instructions. Without these instructions, a computer will not be able to perform as desired. The combination of software with hardware work in tandem to produce any computerized work.

Programmers write different programming languages to create software. These programs are developed by writing logics, which enable computers to perform each set of miniscule task as and when required.
The Evolution

During the 1950s, programs were written in numerical languages, using complex sets of 0s and 1s. The programmers used to tell that they were writing in `machine language'. This software engineering was error-prone and hard to moderate. The introduction of assembler language used symbols instead of numerical characters. This made the programs more flexible towards any moderation or change.

Later on, high level coding came to use. This type of language gained popularity among the professionals, as it used English as the base.

Classification
Software can be classified in two categories, namely:
· Systems Software -
Operating systems (OS) and other utility based programs such as file managers, disk formatters, text editors, display managers etc., which allow the computer to function, are included in this category.
· Application Software -
Programs or a group of programs that has been designed for end-users is known as application software. As it can't run without operating systems or system utilities, application software has to depend on systems software.
Example: Spreadsheets, Database management, Word Processors etc.
