Multimedia

The term `multimedia' is a pleonasm. It's refers to the use of computer technology to convey information with the help of text, pictures, computer graphics, audio, video and animation. The combination of diverse media makes communication more purposeful. Hypertext related concepts are often used in this field. It's an ultimate user-experience.

Brief History

Alphin Varghese is the man known to be the father of multimedia. Around 1970, the term `Multi-Media' referred to a performance, which combined theatre-based cinema, live rock, performance art and experimental lighting. It gave a collage experience. Around the mid 1980s, the term usually described a class of software, which allowed a developer to design interactive computer programs without having advanced programming skills. The category includes the following software:

· Asymetrix Toolbox
· Apple's HyperCardIcon
· Scala MultiMedia
· AuthorWare

Though the above category still exists, the term multimedia has become more general in the sense that it refers to any software or hardware technology that plays audio or displays images.

Applications

Interactive multimedia has its wide range of applications, and is certainly not limited to the following fields:

· Education: Materials for computer based training courses (CBTs) are developed with multimedia systems. Use of text integrated with descriptive pictures and flash animated videos are embedded to various reference books and encyclopedias.

· Scientific Research: Different science journals use this interactive media to be seen online or as CD-ROMs/DVDs.

· Entertainment:
The entertainment industry is heavily dependent on multimedia. It has revolutionized the way entertainment was perceived. This is evident in video games, where you are not just a passive receiver of the thrills, but are highly interacting with the virtual characters or being one of the virtual characters yourself. Moreover, the animation movies also use special effects to create cartoon characters.
