Internet

Internet is a worldwide network of interconnected computers. Across 100 countries, over 350 million computers are connected to each other through a standard Internet protocol. Generally, we tend to mix up the idea of Internet with the World Wide Web. Internet is necessarily the computer networks interlinked with optical cables, wireless devices or copper wires. On the contrary, World Wide Web is a huge collection of information and documents linked by hyperlinks and URLs. You only access the World Wide Web via the Internet.

How It All Began

The launch of Sputnik by the USSR triggered the United States to set up the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA, later known as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA) in February 1958, as it wanted to regain the upper hand in the arms race. ARPA set up the Information Processing Technology Office (IPTO), in order to protect the US from nuclear attack.

ARPA chief J. C. R. Licklider initiated a project in association with the IPTO, citing the potential benefits of a strong communication network across the country, which would be a tough survivor. In 1969, the first node began with the name, ARPAnet. It was a high-speed link between the super computers and all major research institutes in the US. In the process, it came to be known as the net or the Internet.

The E-mail Revolution

Growth of the cyberspace took a vertical leap in the mid 1990s. The dominant online service providers like CompuServe, AOL, etc used to provide e-mail services exclusively to their own customers. Around 1995-96, subscribers of different online service providers were provided with the chance to exchange e-mails among themselves. That's when the use of the Internet increased hundredfold. Today the internet mail server protocol, SMTP has become the international standard for e-mailing.

A Mass Phenomenon

In its early days, Internet was a tool for scientists and well, for hackers. Delphi was the first to offer access to Internet sites through proprietary online service. The other Internet service providers followed, offering web pages to be viewed by individuals and corporate houses. Since, the cyber world has been hosting loads of websites, marking unprecedented information sharing through online networking.

ICANN

The governing body accredited to assign domain names, Internet protocol addresses, etc is The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a California-based organization.
