In computer science, the field of visual computing is known as computer graphics. Graphical designs are used for making pictorial representations of data and information. You can create synthetic visual images, as well as take samples from the real world and manipulate them by altering their spatial and visual information. Graphical designs, animations and illustrations generated by computers help in successful communication of specific information and message to the target audience.

How It All Started
Since the beginning of civilization, human beings have always felt the urge to communicate visually, and with the advancement of civilization, newer media like stone, wood and paper got introduced. It's only a matter of time that computer imaging made its way to the forefront.
In 1962, Ivan Sutherland invented Sketchpad, a computer program that radically changed the face of graphic designing and graphic technology.

The first film to make use of computer graphic design was 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). The film portrayed computers being much more graphically sophisticated in the future. Though, all of its graphical designs were hand-drawn animations, it paved the path for the 1976 sci-fi Futureworld, which was perhaps the first instance of graphic designing to produce computer illustrations.

Image Output Devices
Several hardware devices enable computers to display images. There are certain output devices that encode digital imaging by computers into perceptible visuals and pictures:
. Pen-and-ink Plotters
· Dot-matrix Plotters
. Electrostatic or laser-printer Plotters
· Liquid-crystal Displays (LCDs)
· Plasma Panels
· Active Matrix Panels
· Cathode-ray-tube (CRT) Displays
· Storage Tubes

Graphic designing in computers can be classified as:
. 2D
· 3D
. Shading
· Image Based Rendering
· Texturing
Application of Graphics and Computer Designs
Graphic applications are considered to be as follows:
. Illustration or Design Programs
· Graphic Presentation Software
. Paint Programs
· Animation Software
· Desktop Publishing
· CAD software

Devices like optical scanners read pictorial data and store them in a computer. This analog-to-digital conversion process is reversed when the stored data gets displayed in a graphical form.

Computer animation and graphics are used in various spheres of our everyday life; in education, publishing, advertising, and entertainment, wherever creation of such a visual message is deemed necessary.
